About WX1GYX SKYWARN

Coordinating Communications for Severe Weather Response in the County Warning Area (CWA) of the NWS in Gray, ME

Our Mission

The WX1GYX SKYWARN Amateur Radio Team provides vital, real-time severe weather reporting and backup communications support to the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Gray, Maine. Our dedicated network of volunteer amateur radio operators serves Southern Maine and New Hampshire by gathering ground-truth weather observations during hazardous weather events.

Who We Are

We are a dedicated group of licensed amateur radio operators, storm spotters, and emergency communications volunteers. Operating in close coordination with county emergency management agencies, Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs), and NWS forecasters, our team bridges the gap between radar data and actual field conditions.

How SKYWARN Operates in GYX CWA

  • Spotter Activation: Triggered when severe weather threatens our warning area, activating Net Control Operators (NCOs) and regional spotter nets.
  • Real-Time Observation: Spotters report critical meteorological events including hail size, wind damage, flooding, and heavy snowfall.
  • Actionable Intelligence: Reports are relayed instantly to NWS forecasters to assist in warning issuance and verification.
  • Training & Preparedness: Continuous education through spotter training classes, field guides, and regular communication exercises.
