Mission statement

The NWS Gray SKYWARN Amateur Radio Team exists to provide communication services for the collection of severe weather reports and dissemination of critical weather information in support of the National Weather Service and its mission to protect life and property by improving warning accuracy.

Who we are

We are the SKYWARN Amateur Radio Team serving the National Weather Service Gray, Maine (GYX) forecast area. Our members include SKYWARN spotters, ARES/RACES participants, and local club volunteers committed to coordinated weather intelligence and community support. Our callsign is WX1GYX, and our focus is Southern Maine and New Hampshire.

What we do

  • Severe weather reporting: Collect and relay ground‑truth observations (hail, wind damage, flooding, snowfall) to NWS GYX via approved channels.
  • Amateur radio nets: Activate coordinated SKYWARN nets during significant weather, maintaining resilient communications across the region.
  • Training & outreach: Plan exercises, and workshops with local clubs and emergency partners.
  • Preparedness support: Share weather safety guidance, activation status, and real‑time updates through accessible, branded dashboards.
  • Post‑event documentation: Curate After Action Reports, photos, and summaries to improve team performance, readiness, and community awareness.
